Make the Road PA director Adanjesus Marin (left) holds a news conference Wednesday to announce the new ID program.
The Reading School District will begin offering ID cards to parents and guardians of students regardless of immigration status. The ID program, initiated by Make the Road Pennsylvania, is a first of its kind in the country. It will allow people to pick up their children from school, who in the past ran into problems because they lacked identification. The district's current policy is to turn them away if they do not provide ID or force them to wait through a sometimes lengthy verification process. Make the Road PA director Adanjesus Marin noted, "This will provide dignity to parents within the district who will now be able to show that they do exist and they are somebody." The program is scheduled to start next fall if not sooner. Read the full Reading Eagle article here. Watch the Channel 69 News report here.
