We cannot stand idly by and let killing continue.
The Florida high school massacre ignited an unprecedented scale of nationwide protest and outrage by students that may succeed where adults have failed in the quest to counter gun violence. These wonderful kids deserve our support. We cannot stand idly by and let the killing continue.
Too many politicians add the "right to bear arms" caveat when discussing the need for more effective gun controls. That's a myth and lame excuse to placate the National Rifle Association. I have yet to see any proposed legislation that would deny our right to own guns for hunting, protection and other legitimate uses.
The NRA is an extreme organization responsible for the uncontrolled arming of our country, including folks in the Wallenpaupack area who think it's OK to parade into church with shouldered AR-15 semiautomatic rifles.
By its relentless war against stricter gun controls, the NRA has abandoned any pretense of representing responsible gun owners and forfeited any part in this debate.
Election Day is our chance to vote for government leaders who will not be bullied, as was President Donald Trump when he betrayed our kids and caved to their demands at a cozy White House lunch.
Some argue better gun controls are not the answer, correctly citing other factors such as mental health, violent entertainment and missed early warning signs. Those critics shouldn't divert our attention from the principal need to stop proliferation of deadly firearms.
