Public nursing home should be available when Berks residents need it.
The March 19 Reading Eagle contained sad news ("State wants Berks Heim closed, local official says"). The Republican-dominated Berks County commissioners seem to be headed toward privatizing Berks Heim. This may not bother those who are wealthy enough to afford one of the private retirement homes in the area. But might they not have a relative or neighbor who is not so well-fixed and needs a place to live? Or long-term medical care?
The board is moving in this direction in spite of Democratic Commissioner Kevin S. Barnhardt's recent statement that it would cost each Berks taxpayer a very minimal amount of keep Berks Heim in county hands.
Voters should have thought before voting in Republicans at any level: local, state or national. What they do is cut social services, then work to enrich the already-rich and impoverish the rest of us.
The Eagle should run another article on the actual costs of continuing to run the Heim.
County should keep Heim in public hands
