Proposal would be disastrous for biological diversity.
The Trump administration and Republican members of Congress have proposed legislation that would seriously weaken the Endangered Species Act. This is a very bad idea. The Endangered Species Act has been 99 percent effective in preventing the extinction of plants and animals along with the habitats they need in order to survive, according to the Center for Biological Diversity. Species such as the bald eagle, the American alligator and the grizzly bear are among the many success stories of the act, as these species not only were saved from extinction but have made remarkable recoveries.
It is important that the Endangered Species Act remain intact at a time when record numbers of plants and animals are going extinct around the world, along with the habitats they need in order to survive. Rather than being weakened, the act should be strengthened in order to save the organisms and their associated habitats remaining on this planet.
Once a species disappears, it is gone forever.
