President Donald Trump advertised his reversal of the clean power plan as a way to decrease dependence on imported fuels and revive the flagging coal industry.
First, we have been a net exporter of petroleum energy for six years. Second, there are reasons coal jobs will not resurge: lower costs of other energy sources, growth of renewable energy, higher costs of mining thinning coal seams and less demand for the product from countries that are addressing their own environmental concerns.
Our president is lying to people desperate to keep their way of life, portraying himself as a savior, while he benefits financially from his investments in the petroleum industry.
Science is not a conspiracy theory. We are experiencing climate change in the form of sea level rise, longer heat waves, more droughts, and agricultural challenges. U.S. skills, technology and finances have protected us from many of the effects impacting others. However, we need to take steps now to protect our future.
My congressman, Rep. Patrick Meehan states on his website, "... investment in affordable energy and protecting our environment and citizens are compatible goals." I call on Meehan to speak up for the children and grandchildren he values and demand action be taken to protect our environment and to meet our obligations to the Paris climate treaty.
