Amendment strikes blow against states' rights.
I was disappointed to see that U.S. Rep. Ryan Costello voted in favor of this year's Farm Bill, which contained the disastrous King Amendment. U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa, managed to sneak in an amendment that could have far-reaching consequences on our local rights. It could overturn hundreds of local laws concerning sanitary practices, labor standards, and consumer safety that Pennsylvania residents have fought tirelessly to enact.
Costello typically can be counted on to fight against federal overreach. That's why many people were so disappointed when he stood with the establishment instead of with the people of Pennsylvania. While I commend Costello for publicly stating his opposition to the King Amendment in the past, he needs to stand tall against this amendment if he truly believes in Pennsylvania's right to determine its own laws. He should stand with the values of freedom and states' rights he voiced during his last election campaign and vote no when Congress votes again on the Farm Bill.
