I was very pleased that City Council voted unanimously to adopt a resolution to urge the passage of state Senate Bill 22 and House Bill 722 ("City Council takes a tough stance on gerrymandering," Reading Eagle, Oct. 15). I want to thank Councilman John Slifko for introducing this resolution and working with Fair Districts Berks and the NAACP to garner support. I also want to thank all the members of council for their vote. They understand the detrimental impact of gerrymandering on our city.
It is time that we end this practice of the legislators picking their voters and get back to the voters picking their legislators with the end of partisan redistricting proposed in these two state bills. Gerrymandering is a serious threat to democracy, and we have only a limited time to eliminate it here in Pennsylvania before the next census. I urge people to contact their state representatives and senators and urge them to support these two bills. I ask everyone to stay informed and be active citizens in this fight. A lot of tiny voices can make a great sound and put an end to this practice.
And I want to thank the Reading Eagle for its continuing coverage of this issue.
