The Republicans in Congress chose not to listen to the American public and voted to enact a very unpopular tax cut bill (not reform). The legislation will provide most middle-class taxpayers with minimal and temporary benefits, and will restrict tax deductions in an attempt to punish high-tax states. The bill gives huge, permanent tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations, though historically there is no data to indicate wage increases are tied to the "trickle down" theory of economics.
It also cuts health care for millions, limits opportunities for higher education, and most importantly, blows the ballooning deficit even larger, compromising our national security and future prosperity. I predict the resulting debt increase will prompt Republicans in Congress to cut entitlements, a keystone of the party's agenda.
I view this legislation as a short-term boost that will have negative long-term consequences. This ill-conceived bill was pushed through in a partisan manner. Pursuing real regular order and open, bipartisan dialogue would have better served the American public.
This year should be a referendum on the Republican leadership of President Donald Trump, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Speaker Paul Ryan and all those who ignored their constituents.
