House Republican leadership gives official ability to abuse power.
Thank you for your news coverage and recent editorial concerning Topton and the Pennsylvania House State Government Committee chaired by Rep. Daryl Metcalfe, a Butler County Republican ("Topton creek bed is not the only thing that's crumbling," Reading Eagle, July 10).
Metcalfe epitomizes all that is wrong with our current political system. He has appointed himself guardian of all legislation assigned to his committee and refuses to act on any bill introduced by a Democrat while obsessing over his pet issue: voter fraud. When I visited the Capitol a few months ago, armed guards stood outside the door to his office.
What we all need to remember, however, is that what Metcalfe is doing has the approval of the House Republican leadership.
If House Speaker Mike Turzai and his fellow Republican leaders did not approve of his performance, Metcalfe would no longer be the committee chairman. There is plenty of blame here.
