PA Promise program likely to give big boost to economy.
The strength of a country is found in the education and literacy of its citizenry. Pennsylvania, once an American leader in education, now ranks at the bottom nationally in higher education, according to a listing in U.S. News and World Report.
This ranking is a disgrace of which we should all be rightfully ashamed.
PA Promise, which calls for providing tuition-free college education for qualifying families, is a way of changing that.
In the same way that universal health care is a right, so is universal education, which strengthens our democracy and our economy.
It is time for Pennsylvania to return to its rightful place as a leader in education in the same way it led the founding of this once great country.
The $800 million cost of PA Promise is negligible compared with the benefits that would accrue to Pennsylvania through increased employment.
A state with a populace fully educated is a state with a robust economy, fully paying back the program costs many times over.
An educated populace is the only way a democracy can be strong and this country can be great again.
