Lawmakers should make sure Mueller investigation is completed without interference.
President Donald Trump is evolving from an embarrassment to the presidency into a more serious threat to our country and our government institutions.
As a Republican for more than 50 years, I was stunned and amazed when he won the Republican nomination and horrified when he won the presidency. His recent release of the distorted and incomplete memo from Republicans on the House Intelligence Committee - a decision he made despite grave objections from the FBI director and deputy attorney general - is an outrageous breach of his responsibilities and an attack on the foundations of our legal system.
Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., got it right when he said: "Our nation's elected officials, including the president, must stop looking at this investigation through the warped lens of politics and manufacturing partisan sideshows. If we continue to undermine our own rule of law, we are doing (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's job for him."
There is some speculation that our president will try to use this memo as justification to damage the ongoing investigation and perhaps fire the special prosecutor. If a Democratic president were to behave like Trump, I suspect there would be a deafening uproar from the Republicans and conversation about impeachment.
I urge readers to call on their senators and representative to make sure this investigation is completed without interference and that special prosecutor Robert Mueller is maintained in his position. We deserve a complete and professional investigation.
