Leading lawmaker's behavior can no longer be tolerated.
Berks County citizens should be livid about House State Government Committee Chairman Daryl Metcalfe's childish antics ("Stopped in midstream," Reading Eagle, June 3). Like many who support gerrymandering reform, I am already familiar with Metcalfe's inability to do the job he was elected to do, but even I was shocked to read about his refusal to allow a bill involving Topton to move out of committee. Metcalfe's brazen ego trips have stymied a lot of important legislation in Pennsylvania. We must ask ourselves, how can one man be allowed to stand in the way of democracy like this?
The unfortunate answer is this: Pennsylvania's Republican party allows him to do it.
Metcalfe should have been reassigned from the committee chair the moment he admitted that he blocks any legislation proposed by Democrats. That is not democracy. This is a petulant child throwing a temper tantrum.
Berks voters must demand that Pennsylvania's Republican leadership, if there is any left, take responsibility for the mess they've let Metcalfe make. I urge readers to contact Majority Leader Dave Reed, House Whip Bryan Cutler, and Speaker Mike Turzai's offices and ask them why they allow this nonsense to continue unanswered. Do not stop until this government does its job.
But until then, sorry, Topton. You've been Darylmandered.
State GOP leadership must stop Metcalfe
