Reaction to school shootings largely productive.
I am a lifelong educator. I am tremendously proud of the ways in which students and the school community across Berks County and the nation presented themselves March 14 on the matter of the Florida school shootings.
The issue is school safety. The issue is safety in society as a whole. The issue is mental and emotional wellness. And yes, the issue is access to weapons that are meant only for the battlefield.
In all the debate, we must at least stop and ask: What is it the rest of the civilized world knows that we do not know? Why are we alone of all contemporary, modern societies suffering with mass murder in our schools? Why are we alone having to lock the schoolhouse door? What do we not know today that we once knew 50 years ago?
America is a great nation. We are the beacon of freedom for the rest of the world.
But on the matter of the safety of our children, on what should be the safest place in America, the schoolroom, we are failing, and failing badly.
