If you've ever put a quarter in a slot machine, won 3 cents on the spin and walked away feeling like a winner rather than someone who's just lost 22 cents, then the severance tax on drilling is for you.
Proponents of the tax talk about getting our fair share from the drillers.
The various tax proposals have been nothing more than low-expectation political calculations. They don't take into account the true costs of fracking, because nobody's ever calculated them. Some costs are incalculable. What do you consider the fair share to be when it's your child's asthma or childhood leukemia diagnosis or when it's your child who loses limbs when his home explodes around him? What's the fair share of contaminated water and polluted air? How about the fair share of the damage to our climate?
Proponents of the tax have never calculated the true costs of fracking because they don't want to. All of the evidence to date tells us that the costs will be unimaginably high.
Proponents of the tax have gambled away more than 22 of your cents. They have gambled away your health, safety and environment. We won't know the true cost until the reels spinning for more than a dozen years finally stop.

Tax would not cover true cost of drilling
