Voters should urge lawmakers to do something about growing problem.
Sen. John McCain was a principled man of honor and integrity who did what he thought was best for the country. Hopefully, his legacy will motivate Congress to stand up against President Donald Trump's self-serving misuse of presidential powers.
America must now do the right thing by pressuring our lawmakers to stop this president's outrageous behavior. ln good conscience, how can so many only watch as Trump attacks the free press, ridicules the disabled and condones violence against dissenters? How can Congress support policies that separate children from nursing mothers and lower taxes for the ultra-rich? Why do they remain resolute when he imposes misguided import tariffs on trading partners at the expense of job losses and higher consumer prices for Americans?
Trump's fanatical fan base must do some soul searching. The base cannot continue embracing his vitriolic speech and propaganda that emboldens them to spread hatred and lies. They are told that falsehoods are alternative facts and that truth is not truth. Most disturbing is Trump's cultlike following of radical protectionists that resembles a nationalist movement reminiscent of pre-war, racist Germany.
America is a nation defined by its strength of moral character and integrity. It is a beacon of hope and freedom for the oppressed and a source of compassion and generosity for the poor.
America's strength and resilience will enable her to survive this storm. Americans are learning a lesson about the dangers of complacency and how our democracy can be attacked if we are not vigilant.
