Never would I have ever guessed I'd return to the Boyertown community to live, work and raise a family. In the 1980s I attended elementary and junior high school here. I still hold some of the fondest memories of my brief time in school here, making it an easy decision to move back.
I remember a community supportive of music, art and sport programs with a proud community spirit and a thriving downtown, much unlike any place I lived before or after. I know it wasn't perfect. Nothing ever is. But I am upset by the gaping divisions and backstabbing within today's Boyertown School Board and among those who would seize power at any cost.
The very people supposed to protect and enhance our kids' education are driving a wedge in this place akin to the level of national politics. If residents ignore this situation, please know it won't go away. We need to make sure the programs we had as kids are still here for our own children. No parent dreams of their child having fewer educational opportunities than they did. Yet if we continue on this path, that's exactly what will happen.
Less than 10 percent of those 40 and under voted in the primaries. When are we as parents going to make our voices heard instead of letting others determine what is best for our kids? Please vote for those candidates in favor of strong public education: Brandon Foose, Jill Dennin and Rod Boyer.
